Jasper Ridge Evacuation Route
In the event of catastrophic, life-threatening emergency that would require alternative exit routes out of impacted neighborhoods in Portola Valley, our friends at Jasper Ridge have graciously offered to allow transit through the Preserve as an escape route.
As you know, there are only a handful of ways in and out of Town. Should there be a fast-moving wildfire that makes leaving difficult, maximizing the number of routes is critical.
Conversations between the Town, Jasper Ridge, and the Woodside Fire Protection District recently took place and the three agencies agreed that a route through Jasper Ridge to Sand Hill Road is a critical addition to our joint emergency planning efforts.
Should such an emergency arise, Jasper Ridge staff will open the gate at Escobar Lane, allowing residents to drive northwest away from Town. The dirt road is rough and goes through critically important biological habitat but is passable for the majority of passenger vehicles, and if driven cautiously and considerately, it can be an effective evacuation route if all other routes are closed. The route through the preserve crosses one bridge with a 50,000-pound weight limit and another with an unspecified weight limit but capable of supporting most emergency vehicles.
The Town thanks Jasper Ridge for its commitment to our residents’ safety.
Please Note: Some emergencies may occur at a very fast rate (e.g., recent wildfires in Santa Rosa), and emergency personnel may not have sufficient time to issue relevant information in a timely manner. If you feel that you should evacuate your home – do not wait for WFPD, SMC Sheriff's Office, or Town Hall to inform you. If you think you should leave, do not wait - Evacuate!
