Public Hearing: Wednesday, January 28
The Town Council will conduct a Public Hearing to consider the Town’s first Sustainability Element of the Town’s General Plan on Wednesday, January 28, 2009 at 8:00 p.m.
The Planning Commission has been working on the proposed Sustainability Element for slightly more than a year and has recommended adoption by the Town Council. A major goal of the community is to ensure the sustainability of our environment, and the provisions of the Sustainability Element and other provisions of the General Plan are intended to help the community realize this goal. The Sustainability Element includes broad goals and objectives, with overarching goals including the following:
To encourage and provide community education about sustainable principles and applications.
To encourage the use of renewable resources and minimize the use of nonrenewable resources.
To strive for an optimum balance among the activities of residents, the built environment and the natural environment so as to maintain and improve the condition of life for future generations.
To encourage and provide for enhanced resource efficiency and the use of sustainable materials in all building projects.
To employ the principles of "green" building.
To reduce carbon emissions by 80% below 1990 levels by the year 2050 and AB 32 levels.
To consider impacts on sustainability in all Town decision-making.
In addition, the Sustainability Element has an appendix that lists "Illustrative Policies and Practices" that the Town could consider in furthering the goals and objectives of the Element.
