Spring 2006 Edition

  • Recycled content ceramic tile can contain as much as 70% recycled glass. They are very durable and can be installed wherever conventional tile is specified.

  • Cork flooring is a renewable flooring substitute for traditional hardwoods. Cork is harvested from the outer bark of the cork oak tree and regenerates in about 10 years.

  • Californians saved an estimated 2 billion gallons of water and 26,000 kilowatts of energy by using Energy Star appliances in 2003.

  • Particle board (often used in cabinets, shelving) is constructed of wood fibers and adhesives that contain urea-formaldehyde, a carcinogen. The formaldehyde continuously off-gases, creating unhealthy air in your home. You can avoid particle board by buying cabinets made with a natural wheatboard core or higher quality wood.

  • Over two-thirds of residential construction waste is composed of wood and drywall - completely recyclable materials.

  • An estimated 5 billion pounds of carpet was sent to landfills in 2003. Carpet can be recycled and used in making composite lumber, tile backing board, roof shingles, carpet cushion, etc.
