Green Building and Your Project...Did You Know?

Summer 2005 Edition

  • The Town of Portola Valley has two (2) approved native seed mixes for seeding your property's natural meadow areas or hydroseeding to control erosion.
  • Most lawns require about an inch of water per week. Aeration in early spring or fall will help promote more effective water penetration to the roots.
  • Many local nurseries will take back your empty rigid plastic pots for reuse provided they are unbroken.

  • Installing aerators on kitchen and bathroom faucets combined can save up to 8,600 gallons of water per year.
  • Front-loading washers use up to 40% less water than conventional top-loaders.

  • Full-size Energy Star refrigerators use at least 10% less electricity than conventional units, and some models even use 15% to 20% less.

  • Choosing durable roofing materials is cost effective and reduces landfill deposits. Some examples include asphalt composition shingle, tile, slate, and metal (avoid cedar and wood shake).

  • When choosing fiberglass insulation, to improve indoor air quality, request formaldehyde-free, recycled glass content material.
