Waste Reduction & Recycling

Congratulations Portola Valley!
In the latest quarterly report from GreenWaste Recovery, the Town as a whole had a 75% waste diversion rate!

What We're Working on Now
The Town is working with GreenWaste Recovery, our refuse and recycling processor, to ensure all of the outreach materials on GreenWaste's website, new resident packets and newsletters are consistent with the Town's contract. We recently took a tour of the Materials Recovery Facility and Z-Best Composting Facility to gain an understanding of the process from beginning to end. Next, we plan to audit the Town's operations to determine where we can improve our waste diversion.

Household hazardous waste (HHW) is considered to be any leftover or unused portions of chemical products you use in your kitchen, bathroom, garage, automobile, or yard. Household hazardous waste can pass through treatment processes or storm drains and get discharged into creeks, the Bay, or the Pacific Ocean. For safety and environmental reasons it is illegal to dispose of HHW in the garbage, sewers or storm drains.

San Mateo County Household Hazardous Waste Program
The Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) Program both educates the public about the dangers of toxic household wastes and helps people to dispose of waste properly at HHW Collection Events, and at Used Oil Collection Centers. Collection centers for specific wastes only can also be found at Recycle Works and at earth911.com.
